It is open to fine art painters working in any medium or subject who graduated at least ten years ago or can demonstrate at least ten years of substantive practice, and who were born in or currently live in Scotland. The award funds a dedicated 12-month period of research, development and production of new paintings, followed by an exhibition of selected work at the RSA alongside other RSA award recipients.
Applications for 2026 are closed and the winner has been announced; the award is annual, with the next call expected in 2027. Application details and any fee are published on the RSA opportunities pages when the call opens.
