About
The Preis der Nationalgalerie has been awarded by the Freunde der Nationalgalerie since 2000 to promote outstanding positions in contemporary art, supported by BMW. Earlier editions nominated four artists for a group show at Hamburger Bahnhof.
Artists are selected by the organiser and a jury; there is no application process. For 2026 the prize was awarded directly to Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, announced 5 November 2025.
The prize takes the form of a solo exhibition, 'Maurizio Cattelan. NIGHT', opening at the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, during Berlin Art Week in September 2026.
