About
Penland School of Craft's Core Fellowship is a one-year programme (with one-year renewal possible) for early-career craft artists who want to expand their technical skills and artistic direction. Fellows work 20-25 hours per week for the school from mid-February to November in exchange for a $13,000 annual stipend, tuition for seven workshops (two concentrations and five shorter classes), a private bedroom in shared housing, meals during programming and shared studio space with exhibition opportunities.
Eight fellowships begin each February; the 2027 cohort runs February 2027 to February 2028. Applicants must be at least 21, demonstrate fluency in one or more craft media and, if international, already hold permanent residency or a qualifying work visa.
Applications are accepted via SlideRoom from 15 April to 15 June each year with a $30 fee (reduced fees available on request); the 2027 cohort deadline was 15 June 2026 with notification about two months later.
