About
The Joan Mitchell Fellowship is a five-year, $60,000 award given annually to fifteen artists based in the United States or its territories whose primary practice is painting or sculpture. It replaced the Foundation's earlier Painters & Sculptors Grants.
There is no open application: the Foundation invites a diverse group of nominators each year to put forward artists, and nominated artists are emailed an invitation to complete an online application reviewed by a panel. Artists enrolled in an arts degree programme, past Painters & Sculptors grantees (1994–2020) and collectives are ineligible.
Fellows receive $60,000 distributed over five years plus workshops on finance and legacy planning, peer convenings, professional consultations and eligibility for Joan Mitchell Center residencies in New Orleans from year four.
